PALERMO - Carabinieri officers from the Palermo provincial command, with the support of their first response units and dog unit, have executed a precautionary detention order issued by the Preliminary Investigations Judge at the Palermo Courthouse, at the request of the local Anti-Mafia District Directorate, against three individuals belonging to the same family (one of whom was already in prison for another case). They are held responsible, to varying degrees, for the crimes of complicity in murder and illegal possession and carrying of a firearm, both aggravated. The restrictive measure stems from investigations launched by the Palermo investigative unit immediately after June 30, 2022, when Giuseppe Incontrera, a prominent member of the Porta Nuova mafia district involved in illicit activities such as drug trafficking and mafia treasury management, was shot with a .22 caliber pistol while cycling through the Zisa district. He died shortly thereafter in hospital from serious internal injuries.

Immediately after the incident, officers from the Palermo investigative unit identified the perpetrator as Salvatore Fernandez (currently in custody). After initially fleeing, he voluntarily turned himself in a few days later at a Carabinieri station in the city, admitting his guilt and declaring that he had acted out of personal revenge following an argument with Incontrera. Subsequent investigative efforts, the results of which were partly incorporated into Operation "Vento," carried out on July 6, 2022—a few days after the murder of Incontrera, who was among the recipients of the related order—in which 18 individuals belonging to the Porta Nuova mafia district were arrested, held responsible for the crimes of mafia association , drug trafficking, and extortion aggravated by mafia methods and purposes. These efforts allowed them to ascertain that the murder was in fact premeditated.
The ground for the preparation of the murder
The investigations also revealed that the three persons under the order of Thursday, November 6, 2025, participated in the preparatory stages, providing logistical and moral support to the perpetrator, making available a plot of land for the murder, providing the motorcycle and the murder weapon (not found), and subsequently assisting the perpetrator in concealing evidence. The suspects are currently only suspected of committing a crime, albeit a serious one. Their position will be assessed by the judicial authorities throughout the entire trial process and will be finalized only following the issuance of a final conviction , in accordance with the constitutional principles of presumption of innocence.
